Colonel Anderson was born in Fort Huachuca, Arizona and was commissioned a 2LT in the Field Artillery Branch in 2001. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Central Oklahoma and is finishing the requirements for a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the United States Army War College. His military education includes Air Assault School, Rappel Master School, Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Field Artillery Officer Advance Course, Intermediate Level Education, Advance Operations Course, and Battalion Pre-Command Course.

Colonel Anderson enlisted in 1994 into the Texas Air National Guard where he served as a Squad Member with the 204th Security Forces Squadron, TXANG, until he assessed into the Texas Army National Guard in 2000 and entered the Texas Army National Guard Officer Candidate Program.
Colonel Anderson’s awards and decorations include Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Navy Unit Citation, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (with campaign star), and the Air Assault Badge.
