Army Reserve Ambassador John S. Schoen retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with over 28 years in the United States Army. He served in a myriad of key positions during his career. During 12 years in the Infantry, he served as commander of the Army Drill Team, Infantry Company Commander in the occupied city of West Berlin, and Assistant Professor at USMA. During 16 years as a field grade officer, he deployed to Haiti in Operation Uphold Democracy, served as Force Transportation Officer for the Multinational Force & Observers in the Sinai, Egypt, was the Army Chief in the Office of Defense Cooperation for the US Embassy in Copenhagen, flag level XO in NATO’s Joint Force Command - Naples, NATO liaison to the Multinational Corps in Iraq, and operational planner for CSTC-Afghanistan. As support operations officer for the 507th CSG, he coordinated and evaluated reserve war trace units and as deputy for CGSC distance education, he managed thousands of reserve officers’ enrollment in non-resident CGSC.
Following retirement from the active Army, he spent seven years as a civilian professor of Joint, Multinational & Interagency Operations at the Army’s Command & General Staff College. Following his time teaching at CGSC, he attended the University of Kansas school of law and is currently an active member of the Kansas Bar.
