United States Army Reserve Historical Research Collection

90th Division Soldiers move through the Siegfried Line in 1944.

Soldiers of the 90th Infantry Division, an Army Reserve unit from Texas and Oklahoma, advance into Germany during World War II.

The mission of the United States Army Reserve Historical Research Collection (USARHRC) is to document the history of the United States Army Reserve (USAR).  The goal of the USAR Historical Research Collection is to serve as the institutional memory of the USAR and ensure the use of historical information, insights, and perspective in the military decision-making process.  The collection provides a basis for original research which enables planners and operating officials to apply the lessons of past experience to the resolution of current and future problems.

The USARHRC primarily contains records created by the US Army Reserve Command and the Office of the Chief, Army Reserve, which reflect Army Reserve affairs and history.  There also are some records from other agencies such as Forces Command (FORSCOM) and  the Army Reserve Council (ARC), created by MG Roger W. Sandler, Chief of the Army Reserve (8/91-12/92), in August 1991, and developed to provide the framework for discussions on how the major Army Reserve commanders are being served by the USARC and the Office of the Chief, Army Reserve.

Among the collection are annual reports from subordinate commands dating from 1942 to the present and selected command publications.  Personal papers from Army Reserve leaders such as MG William James Sutton, Chief of the Army Reserve, 1963 - 1971 are also in the collection.

Included in the collection are policy making records; oral histories and selected transcripts; reports; and the organizational and Global War on Terrorism unit histories.  Access to these records aids to strengthen training, support leader development, promote morale and esprit de corps, and fosters historical-mindedness among all members of the USAR and other interested parties.
